The 1960s
The golden age. Enzo Ferrari called the Jaguar E-Type the most beautiful car ever made when it debuted at Geneva in 1961. Lamborghini invented the mid-engine supercar with the Miura in 1966, placing a transverse V12 behind the driver and redefining what a road car could look like. The Ferrari 250 GTO became the most valuable car in history. The MINI won Monte Carlo three times, proving that a small front-wheel-drive car could embarrass purpose-built rally machines. Porsche launched the 911, beginning a lineage that continues today. The decade produced more automotive icons per year than any other, fueled by economic growth, technological optimism, and racing innovation.
