The 600 Pullman was the most prestigious and technically advanced luxury car of its era, the chosen transport of world leaders, royalty, and dictators alike. Its hydraulic systems and engineering complexity represented Mercedes-Benz's ultimate expression of technological supremacy.

History

The Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullman (W100) was introduced in 1963 as the pinnacle of automotive engineering and luxury. Developed during a period when Mercedes-Benz sought to create the finest car in the world, the 600 was designed without regard to cost. It was available in standard wheelbase (3,200mm) and the extended Pullman version (3,900mm wheelbase) with either four doors and a divider partition or six doors. The Pullman's client list read like a Who's Who of global power: Pope Paul VI, Queen Elizabeth II, Coco Chanel, Elvis Presley, and numerous heads of state.

The 600 was powered by Mercedes-Benz's M100 6.3-liter V8 engine, a sophisticated unit producing 250 hp with mechanical fuel injection. But the engine was only part of the story. The car's most remarkable feature was an elaborate hydraulic system that powered virtually everything: windows, seats, trunk lid, fuel filler flap, door closing assistance, and in Pullman versions, the divider partition. This system operated at 150 bar of pressure and was engineered to the standards of aircraft hydraulics. The air suspension provided a supremely comfortable ride regardless of load, automatically maintaining ride height.

The Pullman's interior was finished to standards that no other manufacturer could match. Lambswool carpeting, hand-fitted leather, burled walnut trim, and optional features like a drinks cabinet, telephone, and dictation equipment created a mobile office and lounge of extraordinary refinement. The rear compartment offered individual reclining seats with power adjustment, reading lights, and climate control separate from the front. Build quality was so exceptional that many 600s remain in excellent condition after decades of use.

With 2,677 units produced across all variants over an 18-year production run, the 600 remains one of the greatest luxury cars ever built. Pullman versions, particularly those with documented provenance from notable owners, command the highest prices. The car's hydraulic system, while brilliant, requires specialized expertise to maintain, but well-cared-for examples continue to function as intended. The 600 Pullman remains the standard against which all luxury cars are ultimately measured.
