The 1970s
A decade of extremes. The Lamborghini Countach LP400 defined the supercar silhouette with Marcello Gandini's wedge design, establishing visual language that every supercar since has referenced. The 1973 oil crisis threatened to end performance cars entirely, forcing manufacturers to develop more efficient engines and lighter structures. BMW launched the 3, 5, 6, and 7 Series within a single decade, building the model hierarchy that remains its foundation. The Lancia Stratos dominated rallying with a purpose-built mid-engine design. The Porsche 930 Turbo earned its widowmaker reputation with explosive boost arriving mid-corner. Wedge shapes and wide arches were everywhere.
