What makes it iconic

Porsche's V8 front-engine GT that was intended to replace the 911. The 928 was voted European Car of the Year 1978, the only sports car to ever receive the award. The 911 survived and the 928 died, but history has been kind: the GTS is now recognized as a masterpiece.

History

Porsche's management in the mid-1970s believed the rear-engine 911 was an engineering dead end. The 928 was designed as its replacement: a front-engine, water-cooled V8 grand tourer with sophisticated technology.

The 928's engineering was remarkable: an aluminum V8 engine, rear-mounted transaxle gearbox for weight distribution, Weissach rear axle geometry that provided passive rear-wheel steering, and polyurethane body panels that resisted dents and rust.

The 928 won European Car of the Year 1978, an award traditionally given to family cars, not sports cars. It remains the only sports car to have received it.

The GTS (1992-1995) was the final evolution: 350 PS from 5.4 liters, the widest body, and the most refined chassis. It is widely considered the best front-engine Porsche ever built.

But the 911 refused to die. Customer loyalty and Porsche's turnaround under Wendelin Wiedeking saved the rear-engine icon, and the 928 was discontinued in 1995.

61,056 928s were built across 18 years. GTS models now command EUR 60,000 to EUR 120,000.
