Front-wheel drive puts the engine and driven wheels at the same end of the car, creating a compact, efficient, and lightweight package. The layout tends toward understeer, which is inherently safer, and dominates the hot hatchback segment for good reason. The Peugeot 205 GTI, VW Golf GTI, and Renault Clio proved that front-wheel drive can deliver genuine driving pleasure when the chassis is properly developed.
