Group B homologation special. Mid-engine, all-wheel drive, built from a humble supermini. Won 16 WRC rallies including the 1985 and 1986 championships. Only 200 road cars built. Ari Vatanen's climb at Pikes Peak in the T16 is one of the most famous motorsport moments ever filmed.
History
Peugeot entered Group B rallying by transforming its compact 205 hatchback into a mid-engine, all-wheel-drive weapon. The road car's engine was moved from the front to behind the seats, the rear bodywork was widened dramatically, and a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder produced 200 hp in road trim and over 450 hp in full rally specification.
Jean Todt, then head of Peugeot Sport (later Ferrari F1 team principal and FIA president), oversaw the program. The T16 won the WRC manufacturers' championship in 1985 and 1986, driven by Timo Salonen, Juha Kankkunen, and Bruno Saby.
Ari Vatanen's victory at the 1988 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, filmed by the documentary 'Climb Dance,' produced one of the most dramatic pieces of motorsport footage ever recorded. The T16 Evolution 2, with over 500 hp, climbed the 12.42-mile course in 10 minutes and 47 seconds.
Only 200 road cars were built for homologation. They were so different from the standard 205 that they shared almost nothing beyond the general silhouette and the headlights. The road car produced 200 hp, could reach 210 km/h, and weighed just 980 kg.
Road-going T16s now command EUR 200,000 to EUR 400,000.
