The car that saved Porsche. The mid-engine Boxster funded the 996's development and proved that an affordable Porsche could be a real sports car.

History

In the early 1990s Porsche was near bankruptcy. The Boxster, sharing its front end with the upcoming 996, slashed development costs. Its mid-engine layout gave it balance the 911 couldn't match. The S variant with 252 hp was the sweet spot.
