A super sedan built secretly in partnership with Porsche, the 500E combined a V8 engine from the S-Class with the W124's elegant body. Each car was hand-assembled at Porsche's Zuffenhausen factory, making it one of the most unusual collaborations in automotive history.

History

The Mercedes-Benz 500E was one of the most remarkable sedans of the early 1990s, a car that appeared to be a standard W124 E-Class but concealed a 5.0-liter V8 engine and a dramatically modified chassis. The project was conceived by Mercedes-Benz but executed in large part by Porsche, which was experiencing a sales downturn and had available factory capacity in Zuffenhausen. Each 500E body shell was shipped from Mercedes to Porsche, where it was widened, lowered, and fitted with the V8 engine and modified running gear before being returned to Mercedes for final assembly.

The M119 5.0-liter V8 produced 326 hp and 480 Nm of torque, driving through a four-speed automatic transmission. To accommodate the wider engine, the front subframe was modified, the inner fenders were widened by 55mm, and the track was increased by 56mm at the front and 58mm at the rear. The suspension was completely reworked with unique spring and damper rates, wider tires, and larger brakes borrowed from the SL. The body modifications were so subtle that only a trained eye could distinguish a 500E from a standard W124, with slightly flared wheel arches and wider sill panels being the only external clues.

The 500E was capable of reaching 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds and had its top speed electronically limited to 250 km/h. More impressive than the straight-line figures was the car's dynamic balance. The lowered center of gravity, widened track, and carefully tuned suspension gave it handling that belied its size and weight. The ride quality remained impeccably Mercedes, and the cabin offered full luxury equipment. It was, in many ways, the precursor to the modern AMG super sedan concept.

With 10,479 units produced between 1991 and 1994 (including the facelifted E500 variant), the 500E is not rare in absolute terms, but clean, unmolested examples have become highly sought after. The Porsche connection, V8 performance, and stealth appearance have made it a favorite among knowledgeable enthusiasts. Values have risen sharply, particularly for early cars with the full Porsche assembly provenance.
